September 5th to 7th 2025
Workshops at Craft Festival Wales provided by Make it in Wales
As you know at Make it in Wales we believe in creativity and craftsmanship and work with artists and makers to design and deliver creative workshops.
We believe in providing learning in a relaxed environment with our local team of inspiring designer-maker-tutors. You may be a beginner and want to learn something for the first time, or maybe you’re already proficient in a craft skill and want to master a new technique within your area of interest? Something made well, that looks pleasing to the eye, gives us all pleasure and pride. Making for yourself or for someone else is an alternative to the high street and what you create with us will be more beautiful than anything you can buy there.
Our designer-makers have a background in making and teaching across many craft disciplines. Together, we have designed creative, rewarding skills based courses and workshops in West Wales.
We have teamed up with some lovely makers to provide workshops at the Craft Festival Cardigan again this year.
All workshops are held upstairs in the Castle Green House. All materials included, unless stated otherwise. All workshops £30 plus booking fee. The workshop fee does not include entry into the Festival.
Please book on the Craft Festival website
FRIDAY
11am-1pm Hand-made concertina journaling notebooks with Erica George
This is a mixed media workshop exploring mark making, a narrative and creative process. We will be following simple guidelines and processes to create a bound and illustrated concertina art journal. The focus is on the art of making things up as you go along and is suitable for artists and makers of any ability. No painting and drawing skills required.
2-4pm Woven Textile creative piecing of Melin Trgwynt off cuts with Suzi Park
In this workshop Suzi will be using Melin Tregwynt waste ‘off cuts’ which we can cut into strips and assembled with a sewing machine to make a unique wool fabric. These fabrics can then later be made into cushion covers or bags. Suzi Park is the founder of Make it in Wales and has been organising and teaching craft related workshops since 2014.
SATURDAY
11am-1pm Botanical dyeing and stitching a pouch with Siân Lester
Siân Lester is a West Wales based textile artist and educator whose nature-based practice is focused on botanical dyes, Welsh heritage, and sustainable ethos. Siân will take you through making tassels and twisty cord from Welsh wool yarn that will be immersed into a red giving dye bath of madder root. You will then learn how to make a simple wool felt pouch that you will hand stitch together with blanket stitch and add the finishing touches by attaching your botanically dyed tassels and cord.
2-4pm Suminagashi Ink Marbling with Rocworx
Learn the ancient Japanese heritage craft of Suminagashi ink marbling. In this calm workshop, you will use breath work and simple tools to create mesmerising organic abstract patterns. You will learn how to transfer the patterns to paper, the best ink and tools to use to continue to ink marble at home. We will then use the unique patterns created to make a stunning Japanese stitch bound book. All tools and materials included.
SUNDAY
11am-1pm Macrame plant hanger with Alice Thomas
In this workshop Alice will be offering an introduction to the principle knotting techniques of Macramé weaving. Using sustainably sourced materials in a rainbow of colours, you will have the opportunity to gain a fundamental grounding in the art of Macramé and make a beautiful plant hanger.
2-4pm Create a Brooch from repurposed fabrics with Nia Lewis
Nia Lewis is a textile artist, designer and educator working in West Wales with an interest in repurposing, recycling and sharing her skills.
Repurpose fabric scraps, whether it’s unwanted or damaged items from your wardrobe or odd pieces from your stash. You will be taught a clever technique for producing lengths of ‘yarn’ and once you’ve mastered the technique the possibilities are endless. In this taster workshop you will produce lengths of ‘yarn’ and transform them into a broach using hand and machine sewing techniques.
The techniques you’ll learn have a multitude of craft applications from sewing projects, visible mending, decorative items or even to make vessels! We can supply the fabrics for this exploratory workshop although you’re welcome to bring your own.
